Internet Safety

Here is a letter that went out today to all of our parents from our computer/technology teacher.

Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome you to U.R.C.S.  My name is Ms. Wenzel and I am your child’s computer teacher this year.  As their teacher, I feel it is my responsibility to make sure every child is aware of the need to practice internet safety at school, as well as at home. In your child’s class, we have been discussing the importance of practicing safety on the internet. With today’s technology you could never be too careful. Our children are being placed at risk every day to a world full of strangers. Many of the games they play online are open to the outside world.  Anyone is able to log into these games at any time and start talking and building a relationship with your child. Plus, many of the online games they play seem to have violence laced in them. Games that look so innocent are not! Please ask your child what their user name is, and make sure they are not giving to much information about themselves. It is also important to know your child’s passwords, the sites they visit and who they play with. Limit their time online! They need to understand they have a responsibility to themselves in keeping safe.
It is through a further study on this topic that I was introduced to a free parent webinar. It is only 23 minutes long and I’m quite sure you will find it most informative. The website for this parent webinar is: http://www.netsmartz.org/internetsafety .
Also, I will be integrating fun and exciting lessons that reinforce the lessons already being taught within your child’s classes. Your child will be learning at their own pace, as well as corporately on the Smart board to help with their weaknesses and enhance their strengths. In order to make computer class more enjoyable, I’m requesting for each child to have earbuds or a headset to be able to hear any instructions given on the websites.
 In His Service,
 Ms. Wenzel
