Two Opposing World Views

There is a vast difference between these two views! Only one can be right! Either God is our creator and finding His eternal purpose and plan for one's life is central and essential or "there is no God" and there is no eternal purpose or plan. Either we were created by God and for God or we are just creatures of circumstance.

One of the goals of Christian education is to bring the students into a deeper relationship with their Creator. The opposing goal of secular, public education is self-centered. The Bible, which is one of the few textbooks outlawed in public schools, says, "What does it profit a man if he gains the entire world and loses his soul"?

As the public education system moves further away from the acknowledgement of God the Christian school centers all of it's education towards the service of God and others. While striving for and believing in academic and physical excellence it also strives for spiritual excellence. Which world view do you want for your children and grandchildren? "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord"!

10 Reasons to choose a Christian Education Reason #2

GOD TELLS US TO TEACH OUR CHILDREN THROUGH THE WORD

It is a sad but true irony: public schools, the self-proclaimed shapers of the human mind, have chosen to ignore the God who created the human mind. To their chagrin, they have robbed themselves of their most valuable "textbook," and the only available source of absolute truth.
"The school system that ignores God teaches its pupils to ignore God; and this is not neutrality. It is the worst form of antagonism, for it judges God to be unimportant and irrelevant in human affairs. This is atheism." Gordon H. Clark
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," writes Solomon. "And knowledge of the Holy One is understanding" (Proverbs 9:10). As students pursue the knowledge of math, biology and music in a Christian setting, they're chasing after the knowledge of God. And the by-products of such an endeavor - wisdom and understanding - are the God-given rewards for which every good student strives.
God expects you, as a Christian parent, to plant and nurture His Word in the hearts and minds of your children. This is best accomplished in settings where home, church and school all send the same message, teaching God's truth with clarity, conviction and consistency. And while the benefits of such a commitment are often realized much later, here's one you'll notice in relatively short order. An education that uses God's Word as its foundational text does more than produce spiritually-mature Christians. It makes them wiser and more knowledgeable. It forces them to be better thinkers. And isn't that the goal of education in the first place?

Christian World View

What is a worldview? A worldview is the framework of understanding by which one relates to the world around him. It has been defined as a "lens through which one views the world." A worldview, whether one realizes it our not, forms the basis of our core beliefs and values. It is the grid by which we sift each and every item of new knowledge we encounter and thus, it influences us in profound but often subtle ways. We are often not consciously aware of how our worldview affects our thinking processes. We encounter all types of information and situations which we must process in the course of our daily lives. How we comprehend these situations and respond to them is all reflected in our worldview. Our worldview is closely related to our core values and what we believe in, what we place our faith in. It is the faith system upon which we build our lives. Every decision one makes will ultimately "bow" to one's worldview.

Everyone has a worldview whether they realize it or not. All people live by some sort of faith—be it in money, science, themselves (often referred to as self-reliant American individualism), or government. Each of these is fleeting and can change in a very short time. Money gets lost, scientific theories rise and fall, people make mistakes of judgment, governments barely get anything right and are often corrupt and controlled by special interests. Surely, a valid worldview must be based on something much more permanent, much more solid than a theory or the flimsy foundation of current philosophical thinking.

Every worldview has to answer THREE major questions:

1 - What is the highest good and ULTIMATE reality?

2 -What is wrong with the world?

3 - What is the prescription for putting it right?

As an example, a modern secular worldview of the Occupy Wall Street crowd might answer those questions like this: The highest good is my own happiness; The world problem is my lack of money and my huge college loans; The solution is the government redistribution of wealth.

An atheist scientist might answer those questions like this: The highest good is science; The problem is lack of knowledge; The solution is more education.

Does anyone think that any amount of education is going to solve the problems of humanity like wars, robberies, murders and rapes? We have never been more educated than now and the 20th century has produced more murders and senseless killing that all of the prior centuries combined. Our increased knowledge has only led to better and more efficient means of killing! Human nature has not changed with increased education and never will. The problem clearly lies with something other than a lack of education.

Each worldview has problem and challenges that it needs to defend, and a coherent and defensible worldview needs to be consistent.

Jesus had a biblical worldview. He viewed the world as being created by an omnipotent Creator God who was the Ultimate Reality; hence, the universe consisted of God and everything he created, including the spiritual world of angels and demons. The problem with the world was mankind's sin and he was the antidote. Reconciliation with the Creator God and a changed heart for each person was the answer.

A non-biblical worldview is typically very self-centered, as exemplified above. It typically begins with the notion that I AM AT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE and that I am the highest good and my happiness is the ultimate reality. This is, in fact, the BIG LIE foisted upon this generation and just about every other generation in modern times. It is constantly reinforced by the culture, by our own selfish natures (which denies our own guilt) and by commercial advertising. It is all about ME!!

What a coincidence that the Bible says our three worst enemies are "the world, the flesh (our selfish venial natures) and the devil." If I am the center of the universe and my happiness is the highest good, then all of my decisions in life are based on that LIE! How I live my life is reflected in that core belief, which is how a worldview operates. It controls our thinking without us realizing it. It is fundamental to how we live and how we view the world around us. Does the world exist for my good pleasure or for God's good pleasure? You had better get that one right because there is going to be a final grade!

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall. When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes." Matthew 7:24-29

What is your world view? At Upper Room Christian School our world view, our prospective, our point of reference is the world as being created by an omnipotent Creator God who was the Ultimate Reality; hence, the universe consisted of God and everything he created, including the spiritual world of angels and demons. The problem with the world was mankind's sin and he was the antidote. Reconciliation with the Creator God and a changed heart for each person was the answer.

Curriculum

At Upper Room Christian School we endeavor to identify, locate and use the best curriculum possible for our students. We believe in using the best secular curriculum taught by Christian teachers using a Christian World View. Each year our teachers review and research for the best books and materials to use. We are a New York State regent school so it is important that all of our students do well on both their regent exams and their SAT's.

We select curriculum from all of the major publishers and upgrade all of our books at least every 5 years so that their condition is acceptable and their content is relevant. We are also looking into using either Kindles or Nooks for our High School Students next year!

And of course the Bible is the cornerstone book here at Upper Room Christian School and we read and study it every day!

Advice From a Founding Father to Our Youth

The command to honor your father and mother comprehends not only due respect and obedience to your parents; but all respect to other superiors. The distinction of age, is one established by God himself, and is perhaps the only difference of rank in society, which is of divine origin. . . . in doing honor to age, you honor a divine command, and secure to yourself a source of permanent consolation.
Noah Webster, 1823, "Letters to a Young Gentleman Commencing His Education"

Honor thy Father and thy Mother-an uncompromising commandment.

Take a deeper look with your children at education and a Biblical worldview and prepare them to protect the liberty we cherish today!

It's a Battle for Your Attention!

In our media-driven culture we are being bombarded daily with contradicting messages. On TV, in movies, in print publications and online, men and women of faith are told they're inadequate in the workplace or at home, as spouses or as parents.

And our children are even bigger targets. TV, films and video games offer gratuitous violence, teen programs with provocative clothing and situations, pop-ups on the Web ... they're all fighting against the virtues and values you hold most dear and strive to instill in your kids.

Fortunately there are great, God-honoring alternatives worthy of your attention. For over 20 years, Focus on the Family has been publishing magazines that bring trusted, age-appropriate entertainment, insight and issues right into your home -- where influence begins and thrives. It's more important than ever that we be discerning of our media selections.

You can be confident that Focus on the Family's magazines provide positive and informed fuel for the heart and mind. Generations of readers know the true value of these magazines, so check out the impact these "good choices" have made in their lives.

Is there a Christian approach to teaching history?

In a Christian school history is taught as His story! It is the unfolding of God's wonderful plan of redemption! Some Christian parents believe that history is history – that the worldview or perspective of the author really makes no difference. Let’s see…

Without God in control, history is either controlled by autonomous man or by an impersonal process or fate or kismet or chance. So, we can see no themes, patterns or purposes for human history; just a lot of people waging war on each other in the quest for power or wealth.

However, if we see human history through the lens of Scripture and believe that God Himself is omnipotent and orchestrating events for a greater good, we now have a larger view to see God’s purposes in history.

Find a school like URCS that teaches that human history is a part of God’s redemptive plan for the world. You and your child will be glad you did!

Christian Idea of Self-Government

Let divines and philosophers, statesmen and patriots, unite their endeavors to renovate the age, by impressing the minds of men with the importance of educating their little boys and girls, of inculcating in the minds of youth the fear and love of the Deity and universal philanthropy, and in subordination to these great principles, the love of their country; of instructing them in the art of self-government, without which they never can act a wise part in the government of societies, great or small; in short, of leading them in the study and practice of the exalted virtues of the Christian system . . .

Samuel Adams to John Adams, October 7, 1790Quoted in Verna Hall's Christian History of the Constitution of the United States of America, Vol I: Christian Self-Government, p. XIV.

While the language used may be a bit foreign to us today certainly the principle rings true!

Be not Conformed, Be Transformed!

Rom 12:2 says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God". This is part of the mandate of True Godly Education!

Webster defines conformed as an intransitive verb: to be similar or identical also to be in agreement or harmony. To be obedient or compliant. To act in accordance with prevailing standards or customs.
Webster defines transformed as an intransitive verb: to change.
So then there are two very different educational systems in the world today one teaching us how to CONFORM with the world system based on selfishness and carnality and the other teaching us how to be TRANSFORMED into the image and likeness of God.

It is therefore impossible for a secular public school system to teach true biblical transformation as the carnal and spiritual are at enmity with each other. They have opposing goals! The are subject to different objectives.

Our children are not to be conformed to this worlds ideology but they are to be conformed to the image of God! Rom 8:29 says, " For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers".

What is your child's educational system conforming them to? All education shapes the mind and helps formulate our opinions and beliefs. First our children's minds need to be transformed, changed from their Adamic identity to their identity in Christ! Then they should be taught to be conformed into His image and likeness.
Rom 8:5
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Rom 8:7
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Remember

Throughout the Old Testament, the Israelites were challenged to remember; to remember God’s faithfulness to them throughout various times in their history, and the ways in which He saw them through difficult and even terrifying times. The consequence of not remembering was often either judgment or misfortune.

This challenge still applies to us today. Remembering how God has been faithful to His people throughout history, and throughout our own lives, is a critical aspect of growing in our walk with God and experiencing His blessing.

If we want to ensure that our children have a solid foundation on which to build their lives, it must start with simply, remembering, who God was, is, and always will be. A Christian school is an excellent way to ensure that your children are being taught to remember God on a daily basis.

At Upper Room Christian School we have age appropriate Bible Devotions each morning and an inspiring Chapel Service each Friday Afternoon. Our teachers are constantly teaching according to the New York Standards but with a Christian World View in accordance with 2 Tim 2:2 which says, "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."
