The Importance of a Good Teacher!

William Arthur Ward once said,  “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”  Ms. Cannon, shown here with her Kindergarten class is a great teacher! I watch her students come off the bus each morning with excitement in their eyes. They start as soon as they step into the classroom and leave with the same enthusiasm that they came in with!

Like a gifted Doctor, Actor Athlete or Business Mogul, some people have found their God given gift and when they share it it is a wonder to watch. Ms. Cannon's room is filled with anticipation and excitement. The connection between her and her students is beautiful.

Great people make a great school and I thank God that at Upper Room Christian School God has brought us some great people. Great teachers and Great families working together with the anointing of God to raise up these children in the way they should go!

National School Choice Week

Upper Room Christian School is joining together with thousands of schools and educational institutions in celebrating National School Choice Week! Freedom of Choice is a major tenet of our constitution and a major reason for the formation of our great country. It promotes competition between schools as they compete for the tuition of children based on merit and parental preference rather than geographical location.

While we agree that there is a place for "Public Education" we feel that parents should not be financially penalized for choosing "Private Education". School tax money should be distributed back to the families to choose where and how to spend those dollars. As Christians we believe that the mandate to teach our children comes from God and He has given us a scriptural pattern for that education which for us includes the tenets of the Bible.

Here at Upper Room Christian School we have students from all over the world as well as locally and they leave with not only a college prep level education but with God's Word in their hearts so they can fulfill their destiny and dreams.

Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Day

On the Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday, young people learn about the power of unconditional love even for one’s adversaries as a way to fight injustice and defuse violent disputes. It is a time to show them the power of forgiveness in the healing process at the interpersonal as well as international levels.

Dr. King once said that we all have to decide whether we “will walk in the light of creative altruism or the darkness of destructive selfishness. Life’s most persistent and nagging question, he said, is `what are you doing for others?’” he would quote Mark 9:35, the scripture in which Jesus of Nazareth tells James and John “…whosoever will be great among you shall be your servant; and whosoever among you will be the first shall be the servant of all.” And when Martin talked about the end of his mortal life in one of his last sermons, on February 4, 1968 in the pulpit of Ebenezer Baptist Church, even then he lifted up the value of service as the hallmark of a full life. “I’d like somebody to mention on that day Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to give his life serving others,” he said. “I want you to say on that day, that I did try in my life…to love and serve humanity.

The video above shows a few of our Kindergarten students who created a song together to culminate their study of this great man. Here at Upper Room Christian School we celebrate the life of this great man who was a follower of the greatest man to ever live...Jesus Christ!

The Real Meaning Of Christmas Through the Eyes of a Second Grader.

When asked by her second grade teacher, Mrs. Blom, what does Christmas mean to you Illyana one of her second graders wrote, "Christmas means that its time to celebrate Jesus' birthday. We give toys to the less fortunate. That makes me very happy."

The Bible says, "Raise up a child in the way they should go and they will not depart from it." It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season but it is refreshing when we get back to the true meaning of Christmas which is God's demonstration of His love for us in sending His Son Jesus to live, die and resurrect for us and how that translates in our desire to give to others as a sign of our love.

Here at Upper Room Christian School we pray that you would be filled with the love of God this Christmas and that His peace would fill your hearts and homes.

Another Satisfied Customer!!

They say the proof of the pudding is in the eating and scripture says, "you shall know a tree by its fruit". Here is another parent testimonial of the change in her son's life since attending Upper Room Christian School.

"First I would like to say, I give honor to GOD, who is the head of my life. I want to thank the entire staff at Upper Room Christian School.  I've seen such a drastic change in my son, for the better.  As a family, we pray every night and every morning.  My son's prayers have gone from: 'Thank you God for my mother and father and my brothers, in your Holy Name I pray", (10 seconds) .......to 'Father GOD, we come before you giving you praise and worship, praying for those in need, praying over mom and dad, brothers, grandparents, those that are in need of something, asking for forgiveness of our sins, asking to be blessed by his talent and thanking God for his talents.' (5-10 minutes)  Needless to say, my husband and I were so amazed and speechless. I love my son's transformation. I owe it to you.  Thank you!  I THANK GOD FOR YOU

Have a blessed day!

Gang Violence in Public Schools is on the Increase

Metal detectors will now be part of the security procedure for students in the Brentwood school district. A shooting incident Friday outside the public library is forcing the added security measure, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported. There will be “random searches with the metal detector as well as a handheld one,” said schools Superintendent Levi McIntyre.
The district is also beefing up other security measures and asking for added police patrols. “We will be working very closely with the police,” said Helen Moss, school board president. Stronger deterrents are needed to combat growing gang violence, officials say.
Guardian Angel's leader Curtis Sliwa said. yesterday that "The problem in Brentwood, Central Islip, Bayshore and Wyandanch is that both the Latino and black gangs have had now, in some instances, three generations of gang members from the same family. The grandfather, father and new son. They are rooted into the surrounding public school systems which is where they recruit inside and outside of the campus.
Parents want school choice and a voucher or tax incentive program now more than ever as many public schools are becoming breeding grounds for drugs and violence. Many students no longer feel safe in school.  Upper Room Christian School will be offering a $500 discount off it's already lowest private school tuition for any family from Brentwood, Central Islip, Bayshore and Wyandanch wanting to enroll their children in the school for the rest of the 2016-2017 school year to try to help parents be able to afford a safer and God centered environment for their children.

School Safety

School Safety is a big and important issue nowadays. And it should be!! However school safety should include more than just a safe school building but it should include and insure the safety of each student and staff member inside. It also should be defined as Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Safety. A great school will insure that each person inside the school building is physically safe, emotionally safe and spiritually safe.

Physical Safety involves security of the building and grounds. It also includes an environment that is free of possible hazards. It trains the school and staff in proper drills that will allow for a proper exiting of the building or sheltering in place in an emergency as well as a good means of communications with the fire and police departments that service the school.

Emotional Safety involves a loving, caring environment that inhibits taunting or the bullying of students. It provides an atmosphere where students can learn unhindered by inappropriate remarks and that fosters a positive sense of community and togetherness.

Spiritual Safety involves the teaching of the truth as it relates to absolutes as opposed to "situational ethics". Where everyone is respected while not condoning an anything goes attitude of "if it feels good, it must be good". It requires an atmosphere that fosters a relationship with the creator not one that inhibits it.

Here at Upper Room Christian School we strive to be such a school! We want our students to be and feel safe especially in a world where fear and anxiety is rampant, gang violence and drug use is on the rise and teenage rape is at an all time high.

Proverbs 1:33 But whosoever hearkens to me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

At Upper Room Christian School we do everything possible to enable our students to go to some of the best Colleges and Universities in the country! From our aggressive athletic department to our partnerships with St. John's University and Suffolk Community College we strive for excellence in Academics, Character and Athletics.

Even our elementary and middle school programs with their developmental approach seek to ready our students for college and beyond. And with God's Word, the Bible, at the center of all that we do we are instilling Christian Compassion and Character and a desire in our students to serve their generation with excellence, wisdom and passion.

As this year gets under way we look back at what God has done in our school and our former graduates and we look forward, using all available technology and resources available, to provide our students with the best academic and spiritual environment possible that expresses the love and nature of God in all we do. Let's Go Royals!!

The Importance of Prayer in Schools

The importance of prayer in schools cannot be exaggerated!

As the scripture above clearly instructs, prayer allows us the opportunity of sharing our hopes, dreams, burdens and cares with the God who created us. It calms our worries and reminds us that we are not alone but God is with us and He is the source of our peace.

Students need to be taught to bring their burdens  to God in prayer because he hears them, loves them and is a very present help for them.To take prayer out of school is to also take hope and peace out of school. When we teach and encourage prayer we empower students and remind them that there is a bigger picture than just their current situation or circumstance and that their Creator cares for them.

At Upper Room Christian School we begin each day with prayer. We teach prayer from the scripture and students see examples of how God moves for His people when they call upon Him.We help the students learn to develop a life of prayer and open communication with the God who is a "very present help in times of trouble".

"Thus says the LORD who made the earth, the LORD who formed it to establish it, the LORD is His name, Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.' Jer. 33:3

We just received another great review of our school!

We just received another great review from one of our parents! Mr. St. Louis wrote, "We just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge what a blessing the URCS & it's staff has been to our family over the past 10 years. Our daughter Evanna has attended the school since T-K & is now an 8th grader. Watching her development over the years both academically & spiritually has been 1 of the high lights of our lives & we know that the hard work, guidance & efforts of your teachers has played a pivotal part in this process & that's why we couldn't wait to get our 2nd princess Naomi started with you & she did start kindergarten this year & is already doing well. We also think that's important to note that your hard work is not going unnoticed by others, recently we decided to look at some other schools to see what else is being offered out there, long story short Evanna was accepted into the Waldorf School in garden city. This school is supposedly 1 of the top private prep schools in the state & they really wanted us to enroll her there offering us a lot of incentives, after a tour of the school we didn't see anything that wasn't being offered at Upper Room & not to mention it's not a Christian School. Oh & by the way did we forget to mention to 25,000 $ tuition, naturally it was a no brainer that we decided to keep her at Upper Room where she's getting a high quality education both spiritually & academically. Thank you again for all that you do & God willing we hope to work with you & your staff for many years to come to provide the excellence in education thru Christ that is truly a standard at URCS."
Sincerely: The St Louis Family Ivan, Taira, Evanna & Naomi

Student Testimonial GREAT TEACHER"S MAKE for GREAT SCHOOLS!

We just got a wonderful letter from one of our 2015 graduates! She wrote,
"HEY MRS. P!!!!!! It's Shannon! I'm at S.U.N.Y. Cortland now and I just sent an email to my professor because he asked who my favorite teacher was and why and my roommate and I both agreed that you'd love to see it, so here it is!"

"... my favorite teacher in U.R.C.S. High School was Mrs. Pagano. She was my teacher for AP US History, English 12, and AP Literature. She was my favorite because she never changed the subject topic until the entire class understood what she was teaching, and even if we needed extra help, we never fell behind. She was strict and demanded that we all try our hardest and in doing so, made many students excel higher than they thought they could. Mrs. Pagano was also like a mom to her students, being there whenever we needed her and selflessly sacrificing in order for her student to do and be their best."

I miss you sooo much! And I might need your help this coming semester with my Writing Skills class. When I saw my textbook for that class, I immediately thought of you, anyways, have fun for the rest of your summer and good luck next year!! I love you!! <3 font="">

This was Mrs. Pagano's  response, "Oh my gosh, Shannon, you just made my day, my week, my month and my year!!!!!!!!!!! I am so flattered and I will remember your email whenever I'm having a tough or frustrating day! You can absolutely contact me, anytime, for any kind of help! I will miss you as well! Enjoy your time at college, these days will fly by!!!!
And always make smart, God-centered choices!!
Love, Mrs. P.

URCS Celebrates the National Day of Prayer May 7, 2015

The National Day of Prayer (36 U.S.C. § 119) is an annual day of observance held on the first Thursday of May, designated by the United States Congress, when people are asked "to turn to God in prayer and meditation". Each year since its inception, the president has signed a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.
In an annual tradition that has continued since 1952, President Barack Obama on Wednesday proclaimed Thursday to be the National Day of Prayer.
He said," In the face of tremendous challenges, prayer is a powerful force for peace, justice, and a brighter, more hopeful tomorrow. Today, as we join together in fellowship, we seek to see our own reflection in the struggle of others, to be our brothers' and sisters' keepers, and to keep faith — in one another, in the promise of our nation, and in the Almighty.

The Congress, by Public Law 100-307, as amended, has called on the President to issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a "National Day of Prayer."

Now, therefore, I, Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 7, 2015, as a National Day of Prayer. I invite the citizens of our nation to give thanks, in accordance with their own faiths and consciences, for our many freedoms and blessings, and I join all people of faith in asking for God's continued guidance, mercy, and protection as we seek a more just world."
Upper Room Christian School has observed the National Day of Prayer since the school's  inception in 1981! While we begin each morning with the Pledge to the Christian Flag, Pledge to the American Flag, Preamble to the Constitution of the United States and Prayer, today we took our elementary student's outside during their morning devotions time, which is the first period each day, and brought out our Christian Flags and American Flags, lined up outside On Our Property along Deer Park Avenue and prayed, worshiped, sang and recited scripture. The presence and favor of God was tangible and some cars even stopped to watch and even join in. I wish I had my camera available to take a picture for you to see but we were too engrossed in what God was doing and this will have to suffice.
God is doing great things in your children! Many of our students were engulfed in God's presence to the point of tears, jubilation and fervor during this special time of prayer. I encourage you to ask your children to join you in a special time of prayer and see for yourself how wonderful it is.
We here at Upper Room Christian School are continuing to strive for excellence in spirit, soul and body, ministering to the whole child so they may be raised up to fully apprehend that for which God has created them for!

God Bless You! This day, and everyday.

Upper Room Christian School uses Ren Web School Management System to Keep Our Parents in the Know!

Upper Room Christian School has been using Ren Web's online school management system for 5 years now and it is one of the best investments we ever made! Along with a robust Student Management System that makes record keeping easy and efficient it also includes a Parent Portal.

Ren Web's Parents Portal is the most powerful component in education since the inception of the World Wide Web! Parent's can access their student's work, homework assignments, grades and more from any computer with an internet connection and even from their smartphone 24/7! No more wondering how your child is doing, whether they have homework or playing phone tag with their teacher. It all can be done conviently from your computer or cell phone using the parent portal.

Here is what some parents have said about it:

Testimonials from RenWeb School Parents

RenWeb changed our lives! I have an A.D.D. son who doesn't always remember what his assignments are. RenWeb allows me to check daily to see what homework has been assigned and what tests are coming up!

I get a much faster response communicating with teachers via RenWeb than trying to set up a conference. With RenWeb there are no surprises when report cards come out. RenWeb is the best tool a parent can have. I would be lost without it!”
Cathy G.
Parent

I absolutely love RenWeb. It is the answer to parent involvement. Even though my daughter is away at boarding school, I can still be aware of her progress. In fact, I am much better informed than when she attended school and lived at home. And because it is so detailed, I can also identify where she may be having trouble.

Thank you for developing this wonderful software. … I wish that every school in the nation could be fortunate enough to have it. … It would certainly strengthen the connection between schools, students and families. … RenWeb, you are phenomenal!”
Lenora B.
Parent

I think RenWeb is the best thing my child's school has done in the eight years we have had children there! What a great way to help parents be proactive in keeping students on track. We will refer to the homework assignment page every week to help us plan, and being able to see exactly which chapter or assignment may have given our child trouble helps us target our at-home assistance. You are great, RenWeb!”
Meaghen R.

This is awesome!! I wish all schools would do this. My fifth grader is struggling with her grades a little, and I love being able to check up on her to see that she’s getting all her homework done. Her homework grades were bringing her average down. I don’t think that will be a problem anymore.

Also, I like being able to see how much of a balance they have for lunches. This site is awesome!!!”
