Christmas

Well it's the last day of school before the Christmas break. Today we have 3 academic periods and then Christmas parties for the last two periods. Then we dismiss for the break.

The kids came in dressed in their Sunday best looking sharp. They are so happy as they distribute the gifts they bought for their friends and teachers. For their parties there will be plenty of good food and snacks. Good Christmas music. Video and board games. And a great time of fellowship!

We thank God for His abundant grace in allowing us to learn and fellowship together. We are truely the family of God. Upper Room Christian School is an extension of the church which is His bride and the apple of His eye. We are eternally grateful for the birth, death and resurection of our Lord Jesus Christ and we celebrate the day that we commemorate His Coming and we anticipate His return!

Have a Blessed Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Grace and Peace,
Pastor D

This time is special for our students because they come from so many different school districts. Some of the students won't see their classmates and friends until they come back from the break. We have students from Queens, Nassau and Suffolk that represent over 100 churches. We also represent over 40 different school districts.

What do Teachers Make?

This story was sent to me in an e-mail with an unknown author. I'd love to take credit for it but I'm just passing it on.

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?" He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: "Those who can, do… Those who can't, teach." To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?"
Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make? (She paused for a second, then began...) "Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor winner. I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental. You want to know what I make?" (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)

I make kids wonder. I make them question. I make them apologize and mean it. I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions. I teach them to write and then I make them write. I make them read, read, read. I make them show all their work in math. They use their God given brain, not just the man-made calculator. I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know about the USA while preserving their unique cultural identity. I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe. Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.

(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.) "Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant.... You want to know what I make? I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you make?"

THE CLASSIC DEBATE: BORN OR MADE?

BOTH! We are both born with the God given potential and destiny for greatness and must develop ourselves to meet that great potential. God has given you the ingredients for success but you must cook the soup! Consider the following article found on John Maxwell's website.

As a two-year old toddler, Tiger Woods golfed on national television in a putting contest against Bob Hope. Shirley Temple had already won an Academy Award at age seven. Mozart composed a symphony before his eighth birthday. Surely the great talents are born and not made…right?
A counterpoint to the stories of child prodigies can be found in the life of Anna Mary Moses. A widowed farm wife, Moses took up painting after arthritis rendered her unable to embroider. Beginning at age 75, she painstakingly taught herself to paint. After time, she began selling her oil paintings at county fairs alongside her prizewinning pickles.
In 1938, an art collector discovered Moses’ paintings at a pharmacy in upstate New York. After buying the paintings, the collector took them to Otto Kallir, an art dealer in New York City. In 1940, Kallir brought national attention to Moses by showcasing her art in his Manhattan gallery. Very rapidly, the amazing story of the farm widow turned artist began to spread. The art world was abuzz with talk of Grandma Moses’ folk paintings, and the popularity of her work soared.
Moses would go on to achieve international acclaim, and she would be featured on the cover of Time and Life magazines. By the time she died, at age 101, Grandma Moses had produced an astonishing total of 1600 works of art—250 of them after she celebrated her 100th birthday. Although she never painted until well into her seventies, amazingly, Grandma Moses is now considered one of the finest folk artists in American history
In their recent article for Fast Company, brothers Chip and Dan Heath consider how people are affected by their attitude toward growth. Although they don’t delve into the nature versus nurture debate, they do present an interesting case study in favor of a growth mindset.
In the article, the Heath’s cite an educational experiment involving the growth perspectives of two sets of junior high students. Over eight weeks, the first group was taught to embrace a growth-oriented mindset. Lessons in their classes emphasized the importance of strengthening their minds with messages such as:

• Your brain is like a muscle that can be developed with exercise;• Just as a baby gets smarter as it learns, so can you;• Everything is hard before it gets easy--never give up because you don't master something immediately.

The second group did not spend time talking about the potential to grow during class time. By the end of the experimental period, the growth-oriented group considerably outperformed the other, with several students exhibiting spectacular jumps in their test scores.

The Heath’s speculate that a similar growth mindset might help a person to enhance his or her leadership skills. They conclude their article by stating, “How you think about your skills--as fixed or growing--affects your success.”

As an elderly farm widow, Grandma Moses believed in her ability to cultivate new skills late in life. Her attitude toward growth enabled her to create world-renowned art for posterity to enjoy. Looking at her life begs the questions: What is your attitude toward growth? Are you constantly challenging yourself to improve, or have you settled for your present level of skill?

The Apostle Paul wrote, " I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back. So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision—you’ll see it yet! Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it."
Peterson, E. H. (2002). The Message : The Bible in contemporary language (Php 3:12-16). Colorado Springs, Colo.: NavPress.

"And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises."
The New King James Version. 1982 (Heb 6:11-12). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.

"Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the One who invited us to God. The best invitation we ever received! We were also given absolutely terrific promises to pass on to you—your tickets to participation in the life of God after you turned your back on a world corrupted by lust.
So don’t lose a minute in building on what you’ve been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. With these qualities active and growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without its reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus."

The Current Election

In Friday's Chapel Service we had an awesome time of worship together! Led by Alumni Brandon Daniels the band and singers were under a special anointing. God has blessed our school with such talented students and teachers!

After worship we had a special presentation from Mr. Passalaqua's 11th grade American History class. They are studying the voting process so Mr. Pass set up a mock election. It was great! The students formed three parties over a four week period. They elected campaign managers and nominated candidates. They had primaries and campaigned throughout the school. They even made TV commercials!

In chapel we saw the commercials, heard from the candidates from all three parties (The Common Sense Party, The For The Students Party and The URCS Republic Party), and had a Question and Answer session with the moderator and our pre-k to 12th grade. Then it was time for the vote! The ballot boxes were passed and the students placed their vote into the box. There were a total of four boxes and we will count the votes each day starting on Monday. On Tuesday we will announce the current standings before we recite the pledges and pray. Each day we will update the school until the final announcement of the winner in next week's chapel service.

The elected President and Vice President will meet with a member of the administration monthly to discuss possible area's of improvement for the school and relevant student concerns. One of the officers will also attend each PTA meeting to be a voice for the student body as well as relating back to the students what wonderful things are being planned and done by the concerned parents and teachers of URCS for the betterment of our school and our students.

Our Lady Royal's Varsity Basketball Team won their home game on Thursday by 13 points! They had so much fun out there. The crowd was cheering and everyone had a great time. The girls currently have a record now of 1-1. Go Lady Royals!

The boys are ready to go and get their start this week. I can't wait to watch them play. Our coaches do such a great job with these boys and girls. Teaching the proper balance of competitiveness, sportsmanship and spirituality. We are also looking forward to watching our dynamic Cheerleaders as they inspire the team and the crowd and engage everyone in the game.

The parent/teacher conferences ended on Monday and the first quarter report cards are out. We look forward to the presentation of the Honor Roll and Student Leadership Council certificates this Friday in Chapel! All in all, another great week at Upper Room Christian School thanks to the Grace of God!
To God Be The Glory!
